I saw Bach at Leipzig on opening night - someone invited me to tag along - and I was blown away. I still can't believe the level of precision the actors were able to achieve while also delivering great theatrical performances. It was so funny, I almost fell off my chair. And smart, too. Really a brilliant and beautiful piece of theatre - bravo! Can't wait to see it again (and maybe again!)Leigh S.
What an evening of pleasure! I am with Fasch: Must art be created only to praise God (or Marx or whomever) when it can simply be a gift of joy to our fellow human beings? Stephen Caffrey as Fasch, Paul Vincent O'Connor as Kaufmann, and Larry Paulson as Schott are just brilliant at bringing this intricate fugue to life. This is a play that skewers the "art world" while validating the ability of art to transport us, in the experience and in that ecstatic silence that follows, from the peevish drudgery of our day-to-day lives. Thank you for bringing this obscure little number to Santa Cruz! David S.
OMG!! I saw "Bach at Leipzig" on Tuesday and it was amazing. I knew a little about the play before seeing it. I was totally blown away by both the play and the performances. Although the play was written just a few years ago, it has the feeling of an old play written in the vein of Moliere. Itamar Moses was only 25 years old when he wrote the play. There's something inherently wrong with that fact. How could someone so young, write such a complex, brilliant and funny play? It's just not right... ;-) The performances are staggering. Stephen Caffrey is hilarious. Watching him give his quick-fire delivery of the dialogue is like seeing words fly out of a machine gun. And no one can show bewilderment on their face like Mike Ryan.I can't wait to see it again. I'll be there next weekend. Jean S.
I saw Bach at Leipzig on a Thursday matineé and I was laughing out loud. I had read bits and pieces of the play beforehand, but seeing it come to life was extraordinary, especially the fugue ballet! Smart, funny and very well done. Bravo!Camilla H.
We've been going to SSC for years and years. This had to rank among the better productions of anything we have seen. There is nothing more wonderful in entertainment than when comedy is poignant and thoughtful. This hit both notes.Jonathan Crow
Many lines were inaudible and incomprehensible to dozens of us despite our good seats and hearing. Director and actor need to work on diction, projection and pacing to ensure that most audience members can even hear the funny lines in every scene. This were comments from people in many parts of the house and at different shows. The humor and message can't be sacrificed to sloppy throw-away lines directed to only a few attendees in front or side rows. We are already impressed with the manic antics and tight delivery of the witty writing. If we don't all need to hear the lines, cut them. Of course, the visuals and plot review will clarify what we missed. But if the lines stay, deliver them professionally, please!Francis W.
Absolutely the best production in the summer. Not a weak link in the cast, each actor's flawless timing and dexterity with the language makes for an evening so enjoyable I went back again and I recommend a second trip!P.P.
Bravo to all. Especially the young gun Drew Foster for keeping up with the old pros, bravo.Jason G.
