Burn This? Perhaps Lanford Wilson should have. The dialog veers between a tedious naturalism and rough purplish patches, neither rendered consistently believably in this production. The night I saw the first half (enough was enough), the cast seemed to be skating on the surface, failing to allow time for much depth or subtlety. Ironically, the convincing set only points to how much better suited tv and film are to this kind of material. A disappointment, especially since I fully support SSC tackling more modern plays.

There is something structurally lacking in this play that prevents it from being really great, but the performances are wonderful and the direction and staging are deeply engaging. Gene Gillette as Pale veritably sets the stage on fire and carries the production. Bring him back! How satisfying to see contemporary theater at SSC.

I'm also quite disappointed with this play and not amazed with performance. I do expect and always experienced much better performances at SSC and this one was really flat. I felt a little cheated and also wanted to leave half way but made myself stay to the end, hoping that maybe second half will pick up some action, but not such chance. Please don't do this to your supporters any more.

Outstanding acting... It was wonderful to see the actors staged together in the 1980's loft, with dialogue volleying between their recent loss, and their work. Then Gene Gillette arrives giving a phenomenal performance as the strung-out tough-guy, fast-mouthed, candid, and sexy, who pierces their familiar world.
