SCENE ON THE SQUARE CELEBRATES LOCAL COLLABORATION OF FILM, ART, THEATRE, COMMUNITY

Santa Cruz, CA – Shakespeare Santa Cruz, the Santa Cruz Film Festival and the Museum of Art & History will present Scene on the Square a unique film-art-theatre collaboration in Downtown Santa Cruz, featuring an outdoor screening of Forbidden Planet (inspired by The Tempest) and Why Shakespeare?, a documentary short about how Shakespeare influences our daily lives. Before the show, attendees can check out the Museum’s exhibitions, then grab a chair as the sun sets for this special film event.

Forbidden Planet, the 1956 sci-fi classic, plays with the ideals set forth by Shakespeare’s The Tempest, while Why Shakespeare? (by director Lawrence Bridges, whose film Muse of Fire, featured in SCFF 2007) shows the importance of live theater and the contemporary relevance of Shakespeare’s works, particularly amongst “at risk” youth. SSC will be performing The Tempest and three other plays in the 2007 Festival Season, running from July 17 – September 2.
