SHAKESPEARE TO GO CELEBRATES THE BARD’S BIRTHDAY
WITH PUBLIC PERFORMANCE OF THE TEMPEST
Santa Cruz, CA – In honor of William Shakespeare’s birthday, Shakespeare Santa Cruz’s community outreach program, Shakespeare To Go will be performing a free public performance of this season’s The Tempest at the 418 Project on Sunday, April 22. Every year Shakespeare To Go, which features UCSC Theatre Arts students performing 50-minute versions of Shakespeare plays, visits high schools, middle schools and elementary schools in three counties, reaching upwards of 6000 students, some of whom have had no exposure to live theater. This year’s program is directed by Shakespeare Santa Cruz company actor and UCSC Theatre Arts lecturer Mike Ryan and features an original score by UCSC music and voice student, Steven Good. Shakespeare To Go is part of Shakespeare in American Communities: Shakespeare for a New Generation, sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts in cooperation with Arts Midwest.
Says Sara Wilbourne, SSC Administrative and Educational Coordinator, “We are excited to be able to offer this performance to the community. We have such an extraordinarily talented cast who really bring these characters to life. If you want to get your feet wet with 50 minutes of live Shakespeare, or have always wondered what the fuss is all about, here’s your chance!”
