December 2008

In December 2008, we faced the biggest financial challenge of our 28-year history. After a series of deficit-ending seasons, and with our host university struggling with pending budget cuts, we were given a near-impossible task: raise $300,000 in 10 days or there will be no 2009 summer season. Near-impossible, yes, but impossible it was not.

"The generous public support to save Shakespeare Santa Cruz has set a shining example for the American arts. This may be a local event, but it has national importance."
- Dana Gioia, Former Chairman, National Endowment for the Arts
