Internships - Open

Shakespeare Santa Cruz Internship Program 2010

Marco Barricelli, Artistic Director, Marcus Cato, Managing Director

Shakespeare Santa Cruz offers internships in two areas: artistic and production.

As an intern, you will have a direct link with top theatre professionals, exposure to the latest skills and techniques in your field, professional theatre experience on your resume, and an inside advantage for marketing your new skills.

The 2010 summer season begins with orientations and a full Company meeting on Monday June 21. Intern auditions for the plays and first rehearsals are on Tuesday, June 22. Most of the shops begin work on June 22. The last plays are performed on Sunday evening, August 29. Stage management arrives a week before the actors.

Artistic

Deadline for application: February 28, 2010

The Acting Internship is comprised of the UCSC Summer Session course Acting Shakespeare (course fees paid by SSC), performance as an ensemble member of one or more SSC summer season plays, an understudy assignment, and performance in the Fringe Festival in August. The Fringe Festival is a full-length play featuring all of the acting interns, with technical design and stage management by production interns. The Fringe Festival is an integral part of SSC's season and performs on two Monday nights on the outdoor Festival Glen stage in August.

Once accepted, all acting interns will receive an equal opportunity to audition for ensemble and understudy roles during the first week of rehearsals.

Paul Baird, acting intern 2009: “Shakespeare Santa Cruz has not only astounded me with its friendly professionalism, but it has taught me how to make this career work for me.”

The Directing/Dramaturgy Internships consist of an apprenticeship to one of the season directors/dramaturgs, and hands-on experience with the Company. Interns may apply to work on the Fringe Festival in August. Many Directing/Dramaturgy internsdepart once the show that they are attached to is open.

Amy Crumpacker, directing intern 2009:  “…because of the university atmosphere, this worldwide group of theatre people teach and share more than I have ever experienced before.”

Production

Deadline for application: March 15, 2010

This program is for those primarily interested in stage management, technical production, and design.

The Stage Management Internship is comprised of an assignment as a production assistant to an Equity stage manager. Interns are full members of the stage management teams. There is no class component, but independent study can be arranged if college credit is desired. One of the stage management interns will be the stage manager for the Fringe show; there will also be an intern ASM.

Claire Williams, stage management 2005: “In an entry-level position I was given responsibility and tasks that physically aided the production, and because of this I gained self-confidence in my abilities along with useful knowledge of stage production.”

Technical Internships consist of an assignment as a production or design assistant in the areas of costumes, properties, sound, lighting, scenic construction or scenic painting. There is no class component, but independent study can be arranged if college credit is desired. Most designers are not in residence for the duration of the build; depending on your interest, we might work out an abbreviated schedule. Technical interns are welcome to get involved in the Fringe show. Production interns are free to depart once the show that they are working on has opened.
