SSC’s Fringe production is an opportunity for the season’s interns to perform in a thematic play of their own, as well as for the theatre-going public to enjoy yet another quality performance of live theatre.
The Mock-Tempest
SSC’s fringe show 2007 will be a “mash-up of Tempest-related materials” taking its cue from the spirit of The Mock-Tempest by Thomas Duffett. One of the earliest parodies of Shakespeare’s play, it was probably first performed at the Theatre Royal in London on 19th November, 1674. Many of the traditions of the professional theatre of Shakespeare’s day were lost when the Puritan-controlled parliament closed down the theatres in 1641. The theatre that reopened with the restoration of the monarchy in 1660 was a vigorous reaction to Puritan austerity. Professional actresses appeared on the London stage for the first time. The plays themselves were set, not in faraway romantic locations, but in the streets of London. The sexual and economic freedoms of a new society erupted in a bawdy and tumultuous “show-biz.” Shakespeare’s works were grist for the mill. In that tradition, come and see what we have done with what they did to The Tempest! The Mock-Tempest features our talented acting interns and is created and directed in the Festival Glen by SSC newcomer Alex Harvey, early-career director and graduate of Northwestern University.
